Collage & Collaboration – Mail Art as Creative Practice and Cultural Resistance
In August 2021, something quietly radical happened at Berlin’s historic Tempelhof Airport: Collage & Collaboration, an international Mail Art exhibition, transformed a former military airfield into a space of artistic exchange and collective creativity.
This project, initiated by Lars Schumacher, Rainer Wieczorek, and Susanne Schumacher, brought together hundreds of creative contributions from around the world. The venue—Weather Station House 104—served as the center of a global network of artistic correspondence. Artists sent in collages, letters, postcards, and assemblages. Everything was accepted. No jury, no censorship, no competition. Every work was valued equally, forming a shared visual story.
The exhibition followed in the tradition of 1960s Mail Art, inspired by artists like Ray Johnson. This movement rejected the idea that art needs to be approved or owned by institutions. Instead, it embraced connection, communication, and creativity without limits. In today’s fast digital world, sending something by post—slow, tangible, personal—became a powerful and poetic act of resistance.
The space was more than a gallery. It was alive—a mix of archive and stage, process and performance. Visitors could create their own collages on-site, blurring the line between observer and participant. Live performances added energy and depth: mask theater by Marianne Buchwald (Chicago), a dance piece by Ellyzabeth Adler (Chicago Dance Theater), and percussion by world musician Uli Meinholz (Sundari).
Historically, collage has always lived between destruction and repair, from Dada and John Heartfield to the experimental Fluxus movement. Collage & Collaboration honors that legacy, turning it into a shared, cross-border experience. The exhibition wasn't static—it was a living lab for new ideas and a celebration of art as shared imagination.
At a place once known for international departures, a different kind of travel took place: through images, words, and gestures. This project reminded us that art can still be a Social Sculpture—open, participatory, and full of transformative potential.
