A Social Sculpture in Dialogue with the Present
In a world where boundaries between disciplines are softening and art increasingly seeks to co-create with its audience, the project “Sehnsucht nach einem Gefühl” (“desire for emotion”) emerges as a compelling exploration of participatory aesthetics and collective consciousness. Initiated as part of a 48-hour art event, this collaboration between artist Lars Schumacher, poet Marie-Luise Plat, and traditional letterpress artisans known as die Buchdrucker blends visual, literary, and artisanal mediums into an evocative social sculpture—a contemporary interpretation rooted in the legacy of Joseph Beuys.
Beuys' concept of the Soziale Plastik proposed that every individual, through creative action, holds the potential to shape society. Declaring "Every human being is an artist," Beuys reframed art not as object but as process—an evolving, democratic act of forming the social body. This belief becomes the foundation of the current project, which invites its audience not merely to observe, but to actively engage.
The project unfolds as a series of interactive interventions. One invites visitors to send handwritten postcards—intimate messages destined for someone beloved. Another encourages participation in a collective collage centered on personal longing, as individuals complete the phrase “Ich sehne mich nach…” (“I long for...”). Each contribution, whether anonymous or signed, becomes a part of a larger tapestry, presenting a poetic snapshot of collective yearning.
Moreover, “Kornfelder & Träume” (“Fields of Grain & Dreams”) opens a space for spontaneous lyrical expression, while the revival of traditional letterpress printing bridges heritage with present-day relevance. In bringing these forms together, the artists reawaken tactility, intentionality, and direct human connection in a digital age.
What emerges is more than an art installation—it is a cultural climate check, a living meditation on spirituality, imagination, and the universal human capacity to feel and to transform. In blending aesthetic form with communal invitation, “Sehnsucht nach einem Gefühl” stands as a testimony to the enduring relevance of Beuys’ vision in our fragmented, hypermediated world.
